What Are The Top 5-Star Hotels For A Golf Getaway In Portimao?
Portugal has become an important golf holiday destination in recent decades with access to flights from many regional airports in Europe into the airport of the Algarve, Faro. The proximity of Portimao to the airport and the golfing choices visitors have locally have made Portimao a popular choice for golfers. The town that has always had a fishing and shipbuilding history has become a major tourist hub in the Algarve, ably assisted by its beaches and golf courses.
While Portuguese visitors from the Lisbon area are significant the UK and Ireland provide most of the arrivals with around 75% of those booking accommodation coming in the 3 months, July to September. They have 4 5 star hotel alternatives including the Penina Hotel and Golf Resort. Penina can claim to be the home of Algarve golf and the Championship Course has hosted the Portuguese Open 10 times. There are three courses so visitors need not leave the complex in order to enjoy variety. The Hotel offers everything holidaymakers would expect of a 5 Star facility and staying here offers much more than just hitting that little white ball. There is tennis, an outdoor pool and jogging trails with 4 restaurants to choose from for lunch and dinner.
The 3 other 5 star hotels in Portimao do not have their own courses but that does not preclude them from hosting golfers who will find it easy to book tee-times at any of the local options.
Hotel Algarve Casino
This hotel is close to Rocha Beach and the main entertainment district of Portimao. It has 3 restaurants and after sampling its fine cuisine there is the chance of a little fun in the Casino.
Bela Vista Hotel & Spa
This accommodation is also ideally located for beach and entertainment. It only welcomes adults so families need to look elsewhere for 5 star quality. The hotel is fairly intimate with just 38 rooms but that guarantees good personal service.
Pestana Alvor Praia Beach & Golf Hotel
Located above the ocean beach close to the fishing village of Alvor, there are two saltwater pools for those not wanting to take the steps down to the beach. The setting is stunning and active tourists may take advantage of the parasailing and windsurfing opportunities. While it uses ‘golf’ in its description it has not got a course itself but there are several within a few kilometres.
